Pulling/harvesting garlic at the correct time is vital to having an abundant crop and being able to keep/store over the long winter months. Harvest too soon and the garlic will be small and won't store well. Harvest too late and the wrappers will disintegrate and won't store well. As you can see harvesting garlic at the correct time is very important. So how do you know when to pull garlic?

There are a couple of clues that garlic gives to let you know it is almost time to harvest or is ready to harvest.

Clue one: I know my garlic is almost ready to harvest when the month of July rolls around. I typically start harvesting third week of July and can go as late the beginning of August. It all depends on what type of spring you had.

Clue two: after pulling the scapes, garlic is typically ready to harvest in 2-4 weeks.

Clue three: the garlic leaves. There should be four brown leaves at the bottom before you start pulling.
