Most plants love growing in full sun, but some plants can be grown in part shade or full shade.  Part shade is 2 to 4 hours of sun a day.  This a good article that explains the difference between full sun, part shade, and full shade.

Some plants that can be grown in the shade are:

  • Parsley

  • Lemon Balm

  • Chives

  • Cilantro

  • Sage

  • Thyme

  • Mint

Plants that grow in the shade tend to get "leggy," and by constant trimming, you can keep the plant compact.   Herbs that are grown in the shade tend to need less water.
